MECAL is driven by its Technical Committee through it’s comprehensive Quality Assurance system.
The MECAL Technical Committee is made up of senior and principal-level surveyors and naval architects with extensive experience across commercial vessel certification, design, and regulatory compliance. The Committee provides technical leadership and issues formal guidance to MECAL’s global network of surveyors, naval architects, and specialist consultants, ensuring consistency, clarity, and proportional application of the relevant Codes of Practice.
Through its oversight of technical interpretation and decision-making, the Committee plays a central role in maintaining MECAL’s high professional standards and supporting efficient, well-governed certification processes. This work is underpinned by MECAL’s ISO 9001 quality management system, which is fundamental to delivering accurate, timely, and reliable services to our clients.
In addition, members of the Technical Committee actively contribute to MCA and wider industry working groups, supporting the development, review, and ongoing evolution of the Codes of Practice and associated guidance as the sector continues to grow and diversify.

Professional Standards Committee
MECAL’s Professional Standards Committee oversees our policies on surveyor entry requirements, competency assessment, and ongoing annual accreditation. The Committee reviews and assesses surveyor applications in line with Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) appointment criteria, ensuring that all surveyors operating on behalf of MECAL meet clearly defined standards of qualification, experience, and professional conduct. Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is applied in accordance with the latest Engineering Council requirements.
Working collaboratively with industry partners and professional institutions, MECAL is committed to promoting and strengthening the professional standing of marine surveying. We actively support initiatives that enhance competence, consistency, and recognition across the sector, including the development and delivery of structured, web-based training modules for surveyors and other maritime professionals.
