Owen Preece

Managing Director and Chief Surveyor

Owen holds a Masters degree in Naval Architecture and has been a ship surveyor since 2012, starting as a graduate surveyor with Bureau Veritas and working through to the position of UK Head of Newbuild Construction.
He has worked in various roles ranging from naval architecture to construction management and business development and has been an active member of multiple Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) technical working groups.
He has always had a passion for the marine industry and is committed to maritime safety and sustainability and is motivated to make a positive impact and drive sustainable, long-term change for the industry.
Having taken over MECAL in September 2022 with his wife Nadine, Owen aspires to continue to uphold the highest standards for small commercial vessel & workboat Certification.

Nadine Alegria

Finance Manager

Nadine joined Mecal as the Finance Manager in 2022, coming from technical management roles within the engineering and sciences sector. She oversees the daily financial and administrative activities at HQ.
She looks forward to contributing to the growth of Mecal as a leading UK Certifying Authority & Consultancy.

Kim Bassett

Financial Assistant

Moved from Stroud to Devon in 2008 and joined MECAL shortly after. Working in both private and public sector roles, she gained her a wide range of general administration experience with over 20 years at NatWest Bank, HSBC, then GCHQ, progressing her way up through the ranks into various management roles, before moving to Devon to aid her children’s sporting ambitions.The main focus of her roles has mostly been finance/accounts based, which she continues to do within Mecal being the main point of contact for invoicing.

Jo Broad

Administrator

Jo joined the Mecal family in 2021.
She has always lived and worked in Plymouth, working her way up through the administrative ranks to the top, in an accountancy setting, within the same company for over 34 years. She was an Executive PA to a Chartered Accountant.
She also worked for the NHS, at a local GP surgery. Working through the Covid 19 period, dealing with patients and professionals alike giving excellent customer service both face to face and over the phone.
In her spare time, she likes to spend it with my family and friends, going on holidays, and taking trips out. She has a family pet dog, Ted the Shih Tzu, who takes up a lot of her time!

Sue Bickley

Administrator

Sue has lived and worked in Plymouth all her life joining Mecal in 2021.
Working for the NHS for over 21 years she gained a wide range of administrative skills, starting as a receptionist and working up to a private works administrator, offering a professional patient service at all times.
Sue has 2 grown-up children and 1 gorgeous grand-daughter.
Her main hobbies are walking her 4 dogs and socialising with her family and friends.

Anna Stevenson

Technical Secretary and Quality Lead

Anna joined Mecal in 2011 when she moved to the South West from the Midlands. She has previously worked in both the public and private sector gaining substantial experience of general administration, customer service, training and management. In her previous role as a facilities manager she gained a NEBOSH H&S qualification and experience of ISO 9001 implementation and audit. This has enabled her to take the lead in managing our own ISO 9001: 2015 certification and to pick up on some basic technical aspects of coding around safety. She is also our in house expert for Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) queries.
