Mecal's office staff
CEO and Chief Surveyor
John has a lifetime of experience in the marine sector, from a Merchant Navy deck cadetship in the 1960’s, through university as an engineer, then as a Class Society surveyor for 24 years.
He first started with Mecal as a small vessel surveyor in the mid 1990’s, when Mecal was owned by IMarEST. He was part of the buy-out team in 2001 & took full control of the Company in 2006, in partnership with Julie.
John’s passion has always been for the sea, for safety at sea & for marine technology as a profession.
He chaired a new MCA/Industry professional standards group in 2016 & continues to play a role in moving his profession towards greater recognition & status.
He is also a very active member of the MCA working groups tasked with developing the various small commercial vessel & workboat safety codes.
His dream is to establish Mecal internationally as a small vessel “class society”, recognised as the place to go for the very best in small commercial vessel & workboat standards.
Julie has been involved in the marine survey sector for over 25 years.
When Mecal transferred from IMarEST to the current management in 2001, Julie put the administrative & financial measures in place which contributed greatly to the sustained & impressive growth of Mecal to it’s present day position as a leading UK Certifying Authority & Consultancy. As Mecal Financial Director since 2006, Julie has developed her financial, administrative & HR skills & is also our main IT specialist at HQ.
Moved from Stroud to Devon in 2008 and joined MECAL shortly after. Working in both private and public sector roles, she gained her a wide range of general administration experience with over 20 years at NatWest Bank, HSBC, then GCHQ, progressing her way up through the ranks into various management roles, before moving to Devon to aid her children’s sporting ambitions. The main focus of her roles has mostly been finance/accounts based, which she continues to do within Mecal being the main point of contact for invoicing.
