MECAL provides independent marine consultancy and technical services through a global network of over 90 experienced surveyors, naval architects, and specialist consultants. Our approach combines strong regulatory understanding with practical, proportionate application, supporting owners, operators, designers, and builders across the full lifecycle of commercial vessels, workboats, and specialist craft.

Our consultancy offering is particularly suited to small commercial vessels and workboats where a flexible, risk-based approach is required, without compromising safety, compliance, or technical integrity.

Our consultancy services include:

  • Stability analysis and review, including intact and damage stability assessments
  • Structural assessments to recognised class rules and international standards
  • Newbuild supervision, from design review through to construction oversight
  • Trials supervision, including sea trials and performance verification
  • Large yacht consultancy, supporting commercial and complex operations
  • Owner’s representation, acting on behalf of owners during design, build, refit, and acceptance phases
  • Liaison with Flag States and Classification Societies, supporting approvals and regulatory engagement
  • Expert witness services, providing independent technical opinion
  • Systems approval, including propulsion, electrical, and safety systems
  • Annex 1 (Electrical & Hybrid Propulsion) and Annex 2 (Remotely Operated Vessels) approvals
  • Internal ISM audits, conducted by suitably qualified and experienced auditors
  • Coding gap analysis, identifying compliance requirements and pathways under applicable Codes of Practice
  • Equivalence and exemption applications, including preparation and submission to the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA)
