Surveyors

MECAL maintains a worldwide network of highly qualified and experienced authorised surveyors, enabling us to deliver consistent, reliable certification services across the UK and internationally.

All MECAL surveyors are appointed through a robust, independently audited accreditation process governed by our ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System. Surveyors are assessed against clear competency criteria aligned with MCA appointment standards and recognised industry best practice, ensuring appropriate technical knowledge, regulatory understanding, and practical surveying experience.

Before authorisation, each surveyor undergoes a detailed competency review. Once appointed, surveyors are subject to ongoing oversight, including annual reviews, performance monitoring, and continuing professional development (CPD), to ensure consistency and quality of approach is maintained across all surveys.

Central Surveyor Allocation

To maintain a high and consistent level of service, all surveyor appointments and survey tasking are coordinated directly by MECAL’s central office. Clients are asked to contact the MECAL office to arrange surveys and request surveyor allocation, rather than engaging surveyors independently.

This centralised approach allows MECAL to:

• Ensure the most appropriate surveyor is assigned based on vessel type, operation, and complexity

• Maintain consistency of interpretation of the Codes of Practice

• Provide technical oversight and support throughout the survey process

• Monitor survey quality, turnaround times, and documentation standards

This is a key point that sets MECAL apart from many other Certifying Authorities, where surveyor engagement is often left entirely to the client. By retaining central control of surveyor allocation and tasking, MECAL is able to offer a more controlled, efficient, and professional certification service, with clear accountability and reduced risk of inconsistency.

Our authorised surveyors are fully supported by MECAL’s in-house technical team, ensuring access to specialist advice and internal scrutiny where required, and reinforcing consistent, proportionate application of regulatory requirements across our global surveyor network.
