Changes to UK Fishing Vessel Certification
Seafish will cease carrying out fishing vessel plan approval & survey work on 20 July this year, with responsibility being transferred to the MCA on that date.
Mecal are pleased to have been invited by the MCA to apply to become a Fishing Vessel Certifying Authority to look after registration & tonnage surveys to 24M & for new construction surveys to 12M.
We already have qualified & experienced surveyors & naval architects in place throughout the UK & Ireland for MCA coded workboats & small commercial vessels (some currently Seafish accredited) & we would be carrying out the work using our well establish infrastructure that is already in place.
If we are appointed we are sure that the industry will benefit from our well recognised level of service to the workboat sector.
We will also be involved with the MCA in the development of the Seafish Construction Rules.
Importantly, we do not see any reason that our involvement will bring any additional cost to the industry & it will be our policy to try & keep these costs at or below those currently applied by Seafish.
Our QC policy of central control of all surveys will also ensure consistency in applying the rules & processes.
Please note that Mecal will not be carrying out surveys of existing registered fishing vessels; this remains entirely with the MCA.
The MCA will also retain the plan approval of newbuild fishing vessels.
